About Us

Hi, I’m Cole Harrison — and if you dropped by my place on any given Saturday morning, chances are you’d find me out in the garage with metal shaving dust on my boots, a fresh bead of weld cooling on the fab table, and a lukewarm mug of black coffee sitting on the edge of the tool chest.

I live and work out of Grand Rapids, Michigan. For over sixteen years, I’ve worked as an ASE-Certified Master Automobile Technician and custom garage fabricator. Over that time, I’ve turned everything from cramped, drafty 1950s two-car garages to cavernous pole barns into organized, efficient, heavy-duty workshops. Savvy Garager is where I share everything I’ve learned about building spaces that actually work when real grease, steel, and sawdust meet the concrete.

From a Freezing Michigan Slab to a Dream Workshop

My obsession with garage optimization didn’t start in an architectural design studio — it started out of pure frustration.

Back in the winter of 2008, I was trying to pull a transmission out of an old Chevy truck in an uninsulated, freezing two-car garage. Snow was melting off the undercarriage, soaking into the unsealed concrete slab and turning the floor into an icy, slick mess. Tools were buried across three cardboard boxes, cords were tangled around floor jacks, and whenever I needed a half-inch socket, I spent twenty minutes hunting for it.

I made a vow right then: no more wasted time, no more freezing, and no more working in chaotic, dangerous conditions. Over the next five years, on a shoestring paycheck, I taught myself structural joist weight calculations, subpanel wiring, epoxy and polyaspartic chemical chemistry, and heavy-duty steel workbench fabrication.

“A well-built garage isn’t just about storing your car or stacking plastic bins. It’s a sanctuary for building, fixing, creating, and thinking clearly without tripping over clutter.”

Why Savvy Garager Exists

Most garage advice online falls into two useless extremes:

  • Overpriced glossy catalogs: Showing $80,000 custom cabinetry setups that look like hospital operating rooms and have never seen a drop of oil or a wire wheel.
  • Cheap affiliate junk roundups: Generic articles written by people who have never hung a ceiling rack, tested slab moisture with plastic sheet calcium chloride, or torqued an anchor bolt into concrete.

Savvy Garager is built for homeowners, weekend wrenchers, woodworkers, and DIY fabricators who want genuine, battle-tested solutions. Every guide, comparison, and storage layout on this site is grounded in real-world workshop engineering.

Our Hands-On Testing Standards

When we review overhead ceiling racks, we don’t just quote the manufacturer’s theoretical weight capacity on the box — we inspect lag bolt thread shear strength, ceiling joist span ratings, and truss deflection under load. When we test garage floor coatings, we look at hot tire pickup resistance, chemical tolerance against brake fluid and acetone, and vapor transmission rates through damp concrete slabs.
