What Size Overhead Garage Rack Should You Buy
There is no default size for an overhead garage rack. The right one is set by three things that have nothing to do with the product page: how far apart the framing members above your ceiling actually are, how much ceiling the garage door and its opener already claim when the door is open, and what you plan to put on the deck once it is up there. Most retail listings sort racks by square footage and let you assume bigger is simply better. It is not. A rack that does not match your framing spacing or that sits inside the door's swept path is a rack you will be returning or living with badly.
Why "bigger" is the wrong first question
Retail pages list overhead racks the way they list bookshelves: by dimension and price, largest first. That ordering assumes every garage ceiling is an empty, uninterrupted rectangle. Almost none are. A garage ceiling already has framing running one direction at a fixed spacing, a door that swings up into part of it, and an opener rail running down the middle. Size is not a preference you shop for. It is the last of three answers, not the first.
Treat the question in this order: what can the ceiling structurally accept, what space is actually free once the moving parts are out of the equation, and only then, how much of that space do you need. Skipping to the third question is how a rack ends up ordered, unboxed and returned. What your framing spacing actually permits
Overhead racks are built to bolt into framing at specific intervals, and that interval is a real constraint before it is a marketing detail. What the door and opener leave you to work with
A garage ceiling looks larger than it is once you account for what is already moving through it. Splitting also changes how the load reaches the structure. Racks are one option, not the only one
Once you have sized what a rack could be, it is worth stepping back and asking whether a rack is the right tool for the ceiling space at all.
